Getting ready to power up: A sneak peek into the ePowerMove pilots

As the ePowerMove project steps into an exciting new phase, preparations for our demonstrations are officially underway. Set to run for about a year, our upcoming real-world trials will test how smart, bidirectional (V2G), slow-charging technologies can support mass EV adoption across Europe.

Our pilots will test cutting-edge innovations -from non-intrusive, low-cost hardware to advanced grid-synergy platforms- across three geographically and climatically diverse regions.

Here is a look at what is being built in each pilot location:

  • Helsinki, Finland (Nordic Climate): Located in the urban district of Ruoholahti, the Helsinki pilot will deploy 11 kW bidirectional AC chargers designed specifically to withstand harsh winter conditions. With a minimal physical design to facilitate winter street maintenance, these chargers will serve residents and visitors while focusing on reducing infrastructure costs and enhancing user experience.
  •  Klagenfurt, Austria (Alpine Climate): Centred around Klagenfurt’s main railway station and transport hub, this pilot addresses local mobility and energy challenges by installing 10 public AC charging points (including dedicated car-sharing and accessible spots). Partnering with Avant Car and regional DSO KNG, the pilot will explore new business models and test how V2G charging interacts with grid stability and cross-border e-car sharing (Austria–Slovenia).
  • Nicosia, Cyprus (Mediterranean Climate): Hosted across the expansive University of Cyprus (UCY) campus, the Nicosia pilot will deploy 16 bidirectional AC charging points across two main areas. Operating with extensive campus photovoltaic (PV) and battery storage installations, this pilot will showcase an intelligent, synergistic framework to co-manage distribution grids, reduce charging costs, avoid congestion, and maximise renewable energy use for students, staff, and visitors.

Looking Ahead

Behind the scenes, a robust cloud-based monitoring and data consolidation framework is being established to track operational performance, grid interaction, and user feedback continuously.

As we approach the pilot launch at the turn of the year, our three pilots will provide invaluable insights into making e-mobility smarter, more affordable and seamlessly integrated into Europe’s future energy systems.
